About Us

Carlos Hernandez, President

Carlos Hernández is the son of Puerto Rican immigrants. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. His parents always encouraged their children to hone and improve their bilingual skills. His mother would tell her children, “when we live in the USA talk to people that speak Spanish; when we are in Puerto Rico, find someone that speaks English”. Although he has spent most of his life living on the east coast of the United States he has always been active in the Latinx community.

He moved to Virginia in 1998, where he immediately noticed a need for interpreters in the Latinx community. He started interpreting informally for friends while working in different capacities for Circuit City and Capitol One using his bilingual skills. While working at Capitol One he expressed his desire to assist the community to a greater extent. His managers encouraged him to pursue the court certification through the Supreme Court of Virginia. In 2001, he was successful in passing all components of the Supreme Court of Virginia interpreter certification exam to become a Court Certified Interpreter. The need for interpreters continued to grow and C&M Multilingual Services, Inc., a multilingual interpreting agency was quickly formed.

Throughout the years Carlos has attended and participated in many conferences, seminars, classes and training sessions to grow professionally along with the progressive interpreting industry. While attending an interpretation conference he was invited to attend The Community Interpreter® International training. His focus had always been legal but he wanted to effectively assist the limited English proficient in the educational, medical and social services sectors. Thus, he attended the 40 hour training in October 2017 where he was encouraged to become a trainer. Focusing on the need for qualified community interpreters, in July 2019 he successfully completed and was awarded a license to train interpreters in the only national 40 hour certificate program in community interpreting, The Community Interpreter® International. He is dedicated to continuing to grow in the Interpreting profession, assist his fellow interpreters and always be an asset in the community.
